At the beginning of the year when we started Rebel In A Tutu, my opening post Is This Really It? talked about my desire to change my life. Last autumn, just a few weeks shy of my 58th birthday, I suddenly found myself unemployed and bang, out of the blue I was at one of life’s crossroads. One path led back towards yet another desk job, more drudgery and a dead end. The other path hopefully leads to creativity, job satisfaction and a brighter future.
The one thing I know for sure is that I never want to go back behind a desk and even if this means taking a huge risk – not to mention a big drop in earnings – I need to devote the final chapter of my working life to a massive career change.
I know so many people who are this questioning stage of their lives but I’m the lucky one because I know exactly what I want to do. I want to turn my passion into a business so that I can spend the rest of my working life doing what I was born to do – being creative from dawn until dusk. I’ve had a couple of business ideas simmering just beneath the surface for a while now but have never had the time to devote myself to them and try building them up into something bigger. Well I’ve got the time now and if I fail, it sure as hell won’t be for the lack of trying!
One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that there’s nothing to be gained from being a shrinking violet, so I hope you will excuse the blatant plug for my two fledgling businesses Pip Art and Chalky Chic. You never know, you might like what you see.
There is no such thing as a job for life nowadays, so have you taken the plunge and changed careers later in life? Rebel In A Tutu would love to hear your story…
